BUCKINGHAMTON, N.H. — As the New England Patriots’ training camp opens Friday, the biggest question facing coach Bill Belichick will be whether he has the best players in the locker room.
On Thursday, a pair of players who had been mentioned as potential replacements for James White on the team’s practice squad got their chance.
They were on the field together, at practice, as the Patriots prepared to face the Seattle Seahawks.
“I have two or three guys that are definitely going to get a chance,” Belichick said of the team.
“You can’t get too excited just yet.
You can’t be too certain. “
And then the ones that are not going to, you can’t know.
The most recent training camp roster of 11 players is the most in the NFL, with the other 12 teams having a combined roster of 18 players. “
But, yes, I do feel confident in our group.”

But the Patriots are also expected to make several roster moves that will allow them to add or keep players.
The most obvious of those is a trade to get veteran defensive end Jared Allen, who has been a big part of the Patriots’ defense for the past two seasons.
The Patriots also have options with cornerback Brandon Browner and cornerback Aqib Talib, who have played in every game this season.
Belichick said he’s not interested in adding a wide receiver in the draft, and the Patriots could also use help at quarterback.
“The best thing to do, if you want to do it, is make a move and add an experienced guy,” Belichick told reporters at the practice facility.
“Then, you need to find a guy, like we have been doing, who can play a position that we haven’t had for a while.”
Allen and Talib both signed contracts last offseason that guaranteed them a starting spot in 2018.
Allen is expected to start Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
The two were on special teams for the Patriots in 2017.
Talib played in only two games last season because of a shoulder injury.
He was injured when a teammate grabbed him by the collarbone during the season opener against the New Orleans Saints.
“We’ve got a couple guys in our room that are really good players,” Belichick added.
“One of them is a great player.
I think you’ll see him in the lineup, and I think we’ll see a lot of those guys. “
He’s been doing a really good job.
Talib’s injury has been the main reason the Patriots have struggled in the past. “
So, you know, that’s something we’re really excited about.”
Talib’s injury has been the main reason the Patriots have struggled in the past.
The franchise has had three starting quarterbacks, and Taliv has been out of the lineup in each of those three games.
Taliv, who had just one catch for seven yards in the preseason opener, was inactive again this week against the San Francisco 49ers, when the Patriots lost to the Carolina Panthers.
He played in all 13 games the past four seasons with the San Diego Chargers, but has missed all but one game since 2014.
“Jared Allen has been playing well,” Patriots coach Bill O’Brien said Thursday.
“He’ll continue to get better, and that’s what we’re excited about. “
“Hopefully we can get him in, and hopefully he’ll be able to make an impact.””
