Serena James has hit back at the Serena and Serena’s boyfriend, Alex Morgan, in front at a packed Australian Open crowd.
The world No 2 won her first Wimbledon title in July and has been on a tear since.
She’s won her last two grand slams and is in the top 10 in all three tournaments.
On Tuesday, she won a 5-3 6-4 6-3 victory over the defending champion, Morgan, 5-4, 6-2.
It was the first time in 12 years that James has won in front a crowd of 400.
She said it was time for people to take back their anger.
“I was a little upset.
I think there was a lot of anger there and it was pretty loud,” she said.
“So that’s what I wanted to say, so people get off their phones, get off the internet, and get on with their lives and not be angry.”
The British Open is still the biggest tennis tournament in the world, and is the main event of the Women’s World Cup, which runs from May 6 to June 14.
Serena had been in the lead in the men’s rankings, but was edged out by Australia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenko in a six-set, 5 – 3, 6 – 3 victory.
She has won all three majors since then.
James and Morgan, who is now married, met at the University of Minnesota, where she was a freshman.
In 2015, Morgan said they had been a “romantic couple” before she started dating James, and she said they have been friends ever since.
They broke up in January, after which Morgan said he would move to London to be closer to his family.
“We are still very close,” she told the New York Times.
“It’s not a secret that we love each other.”
