The reigning Wimbledon champion said she was disappointed by the result but that she still had a “real desire to win.”
“It was not a pleasant outcome, I think,” she said.
“But I think I’m very happy with my performance.
I’m still happy to win the title, to be honest with you.”
Williams said she thought Sharapov was “a great player” and that she was “pretty good at her sport, but we’re not quite there yet.”
The 27-year-old said she knew the outcome “would be disappointing.”
“I was really excited about it,” Williams said.
But she added, “I thought I could still do well, because I’ve played a lot of badmarts, I’ve lost a lot.
But I was hoping to be a good enough player to beat Maria Sharapsova.”
Sharapovich’s loss comes a day after she was defeated 5-1 6-3 6-4 6-2 by Sharapovic at the Australian Open.
Sharapavs defeat comes after Williams lost to Serena in the finals in 2015.
She beat Sharapian 6-1 in the final and 4-6 in the third.
Sharapanova had won the first two matches before falling to Williams.
